a little box of...

hand-dyed ribbon!

On this fall afternoon, I decided to try out dying my own ribbons. I had read some things online and ventured to Hobby Lobby to get my supplies. I basically simplified all articles I had read, so here’s what I did.

Supplies:

  • 1 yard 100% cotton

  • Rit-Dye in Royal Blue and Emerald Green

  • 4 avocado pits

  • 1 bag of spools

  • washi tape

  1. Tear cotton lengthwise into 3/4” strips, or whatever width spools you’re using.

  2. Follow instructions for Rit-Dye for both colors: heat water to boiling, add salt, add as much rit dye as you want until desired color

  3. Place in pieces of fabric with tongs and leave to soak until they reach desired color-I only waited a few minutes to keep them a pastel color.

  4. Hang to dry immediately on a drying rack or hanger-secure with clothespins.

  5. For pink color, place avocado pits in water and bring to boil for approx. 20 min and then add in the fabric, leaving as long as you like for desired color. I took some out after 5 min, and others out after 10.

  6. Once dry, use washi tape to secure edge of ribbon to the spool and wrap it around.

  7. Fill a glass box with spools, wrap some presents, take some photos, pretend you’re in Pride and Prejudice and tie them around your sunhat…the world is your oyster!
